Lesson for Labor Day

🌟 Greetings Reader

Did you know the first Labor Day parade took place in New York City on September 5, 1882, with workers taking an unpaid day off to march in solidarity against long hours and harsh conditions?

Now it symbolizes the end of summer marked by parties and barbecues. It's also a great Sunday to teach our kids about laboring for the Lord. Use this free lesson of your last minute planning!

🌟 Sunday School Lesson

Theme: God Gave Us Work to Do
Main Verse: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.” – Colossians 3:23

🙏 Opening Prayer

“Dear Lord, thank You for giving us jobs to do with our hands, hearts, and minds. Help us to remember that all our work is for You. May we always do our best and bring You glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

đź“– Memory Verse Game

Game: “Piece by Piece”

  • Write each word of Colossians 3:23 on separate slips of paper (use this template).
  • Hide the slips around the room.
  • Kids search for them, then bring them back.
  • Work together to put them in the correct order.
  • Say the verse out loud as a group, adding motions like “work” (pretend hammering) and “heart” (hands over heart).

📚 Lesson: God Gave Us Work

Main Idea: Work is a way to serve God!

Key Points:

  1. Work comes from God. In the garden, God gave Adam jobs like caring for plants and animals (Genesis 2:15).
  2. We work for God. Colossians 3:23 reminds us that every job—big or small—should be done as if Jesus is our boss.
  3. Our attitude matters. Doing chores with a joyful heart shows God’s love.
  4. Work is worship. When we do our best, we give God glory.

Discussion Questions:

  • What are some jobs you do at home or school?
  • How does it feel when you do your best at something?
  • How could you “work for the Lord” when cleaning your room, helping a friend, or doing homework?
  • Why do you think God cares about our attitude when we work?

🎲 Group Game: “Job Charades”

  • Write down simple jobs on slips of paper (examples: sweeping, feeding pets, setting the table, washing dishes, praying, singing at church).
  • One child acts out the job without words, and the group guesses.
  • After each turn, remind kids: “Whatever we do, we do it for the Lord!”

🎨 Craft Ideas

Craft 1: Helping Hands for God

  • Give each child a handprint template (or trace their hand).
  • On each finger, write one job they can do “for the Lord.” (ex: clean the church, obey mom and dad, pray, share toys, encourage a friend).
  • Decorate and glue onto a class poster titled “We Work for the Lord!”

Teaching Sunday School is a labor of love for the Lord too! Keep training up those little hearts; you're doing the Lord's work!đź’™

Enjoy!

God Bless!
